My library trips have slowed down quite a bit since school started, but I still have instant access to ebooks and audio books so I’ve been mostly sticking with that.
By the way, a little update that I briefly mentioned on Facebook. I temporarily lost a library book. I am usually pretty good about getting stuff back on time, but this book seemed to be completely missing and I could not find it anywhere! I had already renewed it a couple times and I was freaking out. I sorted through all the clutter around my nightstand. I was tossing junk over my shoulder, and sifting through papers and tossing piles of books off of each shelve muttering out loud about I had JUST seen it! How could this happen!? The irony of the whole story is that this is the book that was missing.
Secrets of an Organized Mom. Doh.
The good news is I did eventually find it weeks later, but I never finished reading it. I obviously never learned anything from it either.
The last book I did read (or I guess I listened to) was called Kiss by Ted Dekker.
At the beginning of the year I asked Messy Mom followers what I needed to read in 2015 and one of you mentioned this author. It’s taken me almost all year to get to it, and he’s not my usual cup of tea, but it was fun to change it up. Ted Dekker is a New York Times best selling christian author who mostly focuses on Fictional mystery thriller stuff. Surprisingly Kiss was the second mystery I had read in row actually. This is totally out of the norm for me! I just finished Girl on a Train and then went straight into Kiss.
J actually read Kiss first and he never reads novels. EVER. That’s all it took for him to be hooked on Ted Dekker though. Not only Dekker, but audio books. It’s been fun to talk about what we are reading and to have some else understand the importance of a good narrator to read an audio book and the speed of the reading etc. Seriously. Don’t even get me started. We’re nerds.
J just finished reading Black, which is also by Ted Dekker and I started it, but I just can’t get into it.
It’s too much fantasy for me, but even as I type this on my laptop with J sitting beside me he is convincing me that I just need to give Black one more shot, promising that it picks up. Fine. I’ll give it a try honey, but only because you’re cute and I want to impress you. But it doesn’t mean I’m about to do a Lord of the Rings marathon or anything.
Alright, so now I want to hear what you are reading and if you have any suggestions. I will probably have more time when I am recovering from birth and breastfeeding around the clock.
I have Jen Hatmaker’s For the Love on hold at the library and I’ve heard so many great things about that one.
Now your turn. Are you a reader? Do you and your spouse ever read the same books? Are you a hard copy, audio, or kindle kind of reader? I’m always looking for suggestions on what to read next!
First – I love the mommy organization book! So checking that one out! As a mom of three little guys, I need more organization!
I’ve been reading, editing and working hard on my first book, due to launch on Amazon November 2nd. It’s called “UnMasked: The Journey from Surviving to Thriving.”
I like reading good clean fiction – I may have to check on Dekker. I am not reading anything right now but writing ferociously on #write31days!!! But watch out November I’m sticking my nose in a book and not coming up for air!!!
I love to read. Christian fiction is a favorite sometimes with a slant toward the Amish. I also have many non-fiction going at the same time. I am finishing Rachel Wojo’s new book, One More Step. It is very good and was just released yesterday. Happy reading and happy baby to you!
I am almost finished with Dean Wake (about the sinking of the Lusitania), and it’s fascinating. I just finished Sycamore Row by John Grisham–another awesome book. Last week I finished Daughter of Highland Hall (Edwardian time period), and a book by one of my daughter’s professors at the Vermont College of Fine Arts–Tim Wynne-Jones. He’s a Canadian YA author and Blink & Caution was the first book I read where one of the character voices is in second person–weird, but it worked. It’s a little edgy, but has a very good message.
I absolutely love reading. I just finished “My Best Friend’s Funeral”. It sounds worse than it is. It is a memoir and I loved it. Took me about a day and a half to read it but I was also sitting on the beach in Hawaii with no kids around so you do the math on that one!
My husband and I do have similar tastes but he does a lot more podcasts than reading.
I love memoirs! Love them. So I will definitely need to check that out. I am so jealous of your beach experience 😉
I’m just finishing up For The Love and I’m loving it!! I have so many on my “to read” list.
Hopefully I will have my hands on it soon! I have heard so many good things about it.
Zach read the whole circle series by Ted Dekker years ago. One look and I was convinced that they would not be my thing. I love listening to him tell me about it though 🙂
I’ve been reading tons of non fiction lately but am in need of a good novel. The new Jan Karon book is next on the list for that because the Mitford Series is my favorite go to for an escape.
If you’ve never read Wendell Berry I highly suggest you check him out. Hannah Coulter is my favorite by him so far but Jayber Crow is probably what he’s most famous for.
I love reading. I have read Ted Dekker’s stuff once before, but a little too intense for me.
Right now I am reading “Bringing Up Bebe” about French parenting habits. It’s pretty interesting and a nice pleasant read.
I also recently LOVED:
– Guernsey Potato Peel and Literary Society
– Kitchen Counter Cooking School (and also The Sharper Your Knife The Less You Cry by the same author)
– Called for Life – about the American doctor who got Ebola last year.
I found all these to be breezy but well-written/interesting reads. 🙂
I prefer to read hard-copy books – I put them on hold at the library. Though, the Kindle is great for nursing since it’s easier to hold with one hand.
I love that you take the time to treat yourself to a good book, it’s important and all of my girlfriends tell me very therapeutic! There is great power in taking the time to feed your mind! Sadly, I’m not reading much these days other than Real Simple and blogs! Hopefully in 2016 and new goals I’ll make the time to read a great book!
