Works For Me Wednesday

Random Fact about me #6: I know the Greek Alphabet. I learned it back in elementary school and can still recite it. I am sure that I would have forgotten by summer if it weren’t for the fact that we learned it in the form of a song. Unfortunately, knowing the greek alphabet has never helped me get anywhere in life, but it does show me just how much a catchy tune can embed something in your mind.

Without even meaning to I have already started to use this teaching method with my 2 year old. We sing little songs daily during mundane tasks to help make the routine a little more fun as well as learning a little something along the way.

For example when it comes to getting dressed we sometimes incorporate the hokey pokey or for the pants we do the rhyme from Dr. Seuss Foot Book “left foot left, right foot right, feet in the day, feet in the night.” It helps him focus when we need to get ready fast, and learning the difference between left and right is a bonus. When it comes to brushing the teeth we sing a song from dare I say it, BARNEY! Part of the song says “I am brushing my teeth on the bottom cause I’d hate to say I forgot ‘em.” and then there is “Oh I am brushing my teeth in the back, I’ve got to get rid of all of that plaque.” And we are still working on this one, because right now a more accurate song for what he does would be “well I am eating my tooth brush and paste, because I just like the way that it tastes.”

I think songs are a great way to learn on any level and it can begin SO young. A lot of the songs we just make up and with my husband being a muscician he likes to get involved too. I know it’s a simple concept as old as the American alphabet, and maybe a little silly at times, but it works for me. To see what is working for other people check out WFMW, at wearethatfamily.com.

My Brother’s Wife & My Former Life

I was born in northern Kentucky, and after my dad’s job relocated us to Atlanta and then Dallas somehow the rest of my family all ended up back in Kentucky going to the same church we had attended for 13 years. I mentioned last week that I was going to be returning to that area for my brother’s wedding, and believe it or not he married a girl that also grew up going to that church and we all went to the same private school there too. I didn’t know her very well back then, but some memories of her stick out in my mind because her name is also Natalie! Now that she is married to my brother she has my maiden name too. I went up to her when the reception was pretty much over, I gave her a hug and said “I was Natalie Smith* once, it’s a lot to live up to, but I think you can handle it.”

What some of you may not know is that my brother (the one that got married) and my husband also have the same name! Yeah, that means there are two Jeremy & Natalies. I am sure it will be a bit confusing, in fact I’ve already gotten a text from a friend that was actually meant to be sent to the other Natalie. We have had two Jeremys for 10 years now though, so I think we can handle this.

The other Jeremy and Natalie are also about the same age apart as my husband and I are. Funny how at one time my brother said he would never date anyone younger than me and didn’t exactly approve of the 6 year age difference between my husband and I. Oh the irony. So now our family is complete. Out of the 6 of us (me, my 2 brothers, and our spouses) I am the youngest and married someone older than my brothers and my oldest brother married someone younger than me.

I know it’s all a little confusing, but that’s my family for ya. I am so happy for my big bro and I wish him and his bride all the best because I think Jeremy and Natalie deserve it (wink wink).

*For those who know my maiden name you are probably really confused. I had to use an alias last name and Smith was the most generic I could think of.

Top 5 Complaints

I don’t like to be a whiner, but sometimes you just have to let it all out. Like nurmisur commented when I announced the pregnancy

“Good thing about having blog is that you can complain about morning sickness, cramps, and the whole thing as much as you want”

So I am going to take her up on that and list my top 5 pregnancy complaints for the first trimester.

1. Obviously nausea is a biggie. So far no actual vomiting unlike my last pregnancy. I still feel really sick though if I haven’t eaten in a few hours, and then it’s hard to find something I actually feel like eating. Oh, and then there is brushing the teeth and flossing, talk about a gag fest.

2. I am really in between clothes right now. I am definitely out of my regular clothes, but the maternity clothes are still too big. I have a few items that I wear over and over at this time.

3. No one likes having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. Maybe it’s not that bad, but it feels like it, especially at night.

4. Speaking of night, I am still having those weird dreams. They range from bizarre dreams to night mares. Sometimes they startle me and I will wake up gasping. Needless to say between that and the ongoing emptying of the bladder I get very little sleep.

5. I have saved the strangest for last. I have struggled with having headaches during this pregnancy, but mostly when I am on Facebook. I know it sounds crazy, but I guess it’s the small photos, combined with scrolling and reading. I can’t do it anymore. I have to read slowly then stop and scroll down. ‘Scrolling” linked with nausea. I guess that is not a pregnancy symptom of our ancestors.

The Messy Mom Turns One

I really can not believe that I have been writing on this site for over a year now. My first entry was August 7, 2008 and I started off with this short list of things I wanted to offer through my blog postings.

1. ENCOURAGEMENT
Through the good and the bad it is encouraging to know that there are people out there going through the same thing.

2. HUMOR
I never take myself too seriously. I am a self proclaimed sit down comedian

3. IDEAS
Tips tricks and advice on things from everyday life ☺

4. PHOTOS
I am a photographer so I cannot help but have VISUALS!

5. A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
We can all benefit from hearing from a point of view different than our own.

If nothing else has come from this venture I can at least look back at this point and say to myself “I did it”. I said I wanted to write and share these 5 things with the world and for better or for worse, typos, bloopers, brain farts and all, I did it.

Z’s 1st Birthday

This week we celebrated baby Z’s first birthday with a construction party. I have to admit I had been so focused on out of town guests, parties, presents, and cake that I almost forgot that my baby was turning one! Wow, it feels like only yesterday he seemed so fragile resting in my arms and I would watch in amazement as he would barely open his eyes to peek up at me. Now he is on the go and ready to explore the world around him, but he still looks up at me with those same eyes only now he can say mama. It’s hard to believe all that happened in one year. It is a pretty big milestone he just crossed, and we went out with a bang. Here are some of the highlights of Baby Z’s First Birthday…

**I apologize for the poor photo quality. The digital images were erased somehow, but luckily I had prints so these are just photos of the photos. Oops.**

When Z was born we put balloons out that let the neighbors know that he had arrived. We put a bouquet of balloons in the yard again for his birthday.

The theme was construction. I was a bit embarrassed that our house is STILL under construction so rather than fight I just went with it.

There were trucks, cones, party hats, caution tape, and Z even had a construction truck romper.

One of my best friends made the cakes and they turned out AMAZING.

When the guest arrived we snacked, visited, and looked at photo albums of Z and his baby book reminiscing all the good times from the past year.

We knew the cake would be messy so we undressed Z for the big event. Then TA-DA construction cloth diaper!

He loved this next part.

After the cake he had a quick bath and then sported his final ensemble for the night, another construction outfit.

Z had lots of fun and really enjoyed being spoiled with attention and plenty of presents. In honor of my baby boy I read this poem that I had written for him. I’ll end with this.

Do You Know That Feeling?

Do you know that feeling when someone comes into your life

and now you can’t imagine life without them there?

And the fear of loosing them can be all too intense

so you ask God for protection with each prayer.

Do you know that feeling when a little smile

can be the one thing that gets you through the day?

Then there are the times when you are soaking in the moment

and you just lay there with nothing to say

Oh what a feeling when you’re laughing so hard

you can’t stop, but you don’t even know why.

Or the feeling that only your tears can express,

when you just cry cause your so thankful for this life.

This is your one chance and you want to get it right

but you know there’s no one that can tell you how.

Can you believe you thought that all of this would hold you back

when really life is so much greater now.

Do you know that feeling when words cannot express

such an overwhelming sense of joy?

Well, I have know these feelings for a whole year now

HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY TO MY LITTLE BOY.

My First Blog

Welcome to the messy mom blog! The reason that I chose that name is not because I am proud to be messy or because I feel like that is the phrase that defines me. It is because I wanted to be as transparent as possible. This blog isn’t about having all the answers, but hopefully I do have a few. I have been a wife for almost 8 years and a mom for 11 months now. Like most of us, I am just trying to figure it all out day by day, and to be honest sometimes it gets pretty messy. Not just metaphorically, but in my case, quite literally. You DO NOT want to see my house right now, (although in future entries I will be posting that too.) I am so excited to start writing and I’ve compiled a list of some of things you can expect to get out of the messy mom blog.

Whether you are a new mom, an experienced mom, or even if you just happen to have a mom, I hope that you enjoy reading these upcoming adventures and maybe in the end life can seem just a little less messy.
