Z’s Language

My sister in law remembers when her baby girl started to properly pronounce spaghetti. It was a day of mourning for her because it was all she had left to cling to in the world of baby talk. I understand her sentiment. I remember when Z called his elbows elmos and his bear was a beer, but now he says these words clearly and he even calls his sister by her name (Sedona) instead of calling her donut like he had for so long. That’s not to say that the fun is completely over. At the tender age of 3 there are still a few words left that he mispronounces and I smile every time I hear them.
Let’s see how well you can interpret the language of Z. I will even give you a hint for each one.

1. Nuffin= A breakfast pastry

2. Bajambas= You wear to bed
3. Yes Man= The polite way to answer a female
4. Gwirl= Not a boy
5. Prooter= What I am typing on right now
6. Tickle= An evolved cucumber
7. Mugick= What listen to on your ipod
8. Moat= Goes with the TV
9. Taybo= What you set for dinner
10. Chickmunks, Lightning Da Queen, and Shrak= Popular Animated Characters
I am sure you probably guessed all of those, but I will go ahead and leave the answers in the comments section just in case.

SLEEP!

Today we observed the notorious daylight savings time. SPRING AHEAD they say. I don’t know if spring is the right verb to describe what my family does after loosing an hour, but whatever. It’s not that we have some kind of schedule to mess up, because we mostly just go with the flow around here.
Our sleeping arrangements are so dysfunctional I won’t even go into it, but I am sure it is probably the opposite of what you will find recommended in any parenting books. We find sleep when and wherever we can. My mom calls it musical beds. All I know is that by morning usually everyone ends up in my bed.

Except the other night when I accidently fell asleep with Z in his bed, I woke up early in the morning and he was gone. I guess he likes snuggling with his daddy more because he left to go to our room. In fact the whole family was in my bed except for me! Something is just not right about that.
So, back to daylight savings time. Z was not in anyway interested in going to bed an hour early even though we had to get up early for church the next day. We are almost always the last ones to leave the building on Sundays and it is always a long day for us. I could tell the kids were exhausted. While J was getting the last of his music equipment packed up Z found a “soft spot” on the ground and just passed out right there.

That boy will never admit to being tired and he never slows down, but he does crash, on occasion.
When it comes to our wacky musical beds here is a little clip I pulled off youtube that I think some of us can relate to all too well.
How did you handle daylight savings time this week?

Burnt Popcorn

I still don’t have a long term solution to this whole computer fiasco and it’s got me on edge. I know it might sound like I’m being overly dramatic about the whole thing, but I do have a job and I can not do it without a working computer. After doing some online shopping I’ve had to face the harsh reality that it is going to cost a pretty penny for me to replace what I have now, even with the apple discount my dad gets for being a nerd, uh, I mean infrastructure engineer. My plan is to sell some things on ebay. I am sure I can get something for the hunk of junk laptops that we’ve got right now, and I do have an extra canon SLR that I’ve been meaning to get rid of. And if all that doesn’t add up I will probably have to resort to selling some organs on the black market, but we’ll see.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to live in simpler times. Like back in the 1800’s. You wouldn’t have to worry about the added expenses and malfunctions of technology, but there would be other issues like not having enough rain for harvest season or your horse getting rabies or something. Not exactly stuff you can take to the genius bar at your local Mac store. So maybe I am better off where I am at.
As far as the situation I am currently in, the power cord I ordered came in today so I can at least get on my computer now. In fact, here some of the duck photos that I mentioned I was in fear of loosing.

I burnt some popcorn last week. You know you are a bad cook when you ruin microwave popcorn. The instructions clearly say stay and listen (there is even a little cartoon drawing in case you can’t read!)
But I didn’t follow the instructions and stay and listen, both things which can have serious consequences in life. Anyway, I tried to eat the popcorn. I tried to feed it to my children, but none of us really appreciated the extra “doneness” of it. That’s where the ducks come in. We went to the lake fed the burnt popcorn to the ducks and I think all parties involved had a great time.
Moral of the story, besides stay and listen, if life gives you lemons make lemonade and if life gives you burnt popcorn go to the park and feed the ducks. I still have no idea what the end result of my computer situation will be, but looking at these picture reminds me that it will all turn out okay.

Feeding ducks as a family and enjoying a beautiful day is one of my finer things. That’s why I am linking up with Finer Things Friday over at Amy’s Finer Things. Check it out.

Mac Breaks Down, And So Do I

It seems like every other week I have some piece of modern technology failing me. Recently it’s been my digital camera, then my cell phone, and this week it appears to be my laptop AGAIN. I can’t complain. This laptop has been with me even longer than my children.

My little boy learned to type his name on the computer. A practice which sort of back fired on me when he started telling people his name was “Z I O N space bar L E E”.

All 8 of the members of my family (my parents, brothers, and sister in laws) own Macbooks.

Even baby SJ came to love this titanium member of our clan.

The problem began on Monday afternoon when my charger started smoking. I panicked and J tried to perform an immediate emergency operation with a solder gun (because he is an IT super hero). In the mean time the battery on my laptop was running out.

40%…35%

Come to find out, it wasn’t the charger, it was the actual computer itself and by this time I am down 15% left of my battery power.

“Do you have everything backed up” J says as he peers at the screen trying everything he can to save the poor creature.

“I think so”, but as the words come out I start doubting myself and I begin to sweat.

“Go get your external hard drive!” he shouts.

My heart is pounding as I imagine the thought of loosing everything. I try very hard to make double back ups of all my photos, but there is so much more than that. I start rattling off files to put on the hard drive.

“MY CALENDAR, DOCUMENTS, STICKIES, I DON’T KNOW! I NEED IT ALL! I CAN’T LOOSE THIS COMPUTER.” in the meantime the power is quickly fading like the last grains of sand slipping through an hour glass.

10%… 5%

My mind raced to think of every last item and I remember some recent photos of the kids feeding the ducks and I jumped in front of J to locate the folder myself and transfer it to the hard drive.

“I don’t think it’s going to make it”. J said as we watched the race between the folder that was being transferred and the tiny percent of battery power left on the machine, within seconds everything went black. My heart sank.

Reluctantly J took the charger off of his new laptop. He was hesitant because he had seen what my laptop had done to the other charger, but as he plugged it in, the life came back onto the screen. It wasn’t a permanent solution, but at least there was a glimmer of hope. It’s too soon to really tell the fate of my beloved 17 inch. I am currently using J’s old computer to type this blog, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with all of this.

Am I the only one who has such a tight relationship with my computer? Is there anyone else in danger of passing out if your laptop crashes?

One SWEET Day

Here are 10 things I loved about SJ’s first birthday party.

1. The Cupcake Inspiration

The theme came from the pink cupcakes that I made a year and a half ago when I announced that I was having a girl.

2. The 70 beautiful cupcakes
I am convinced that I have some of the most talented friends in the world, they made the assortment of cupcakes which varieties included strawberry, chocolate, cinnamon and more!

3. The BIG Cupcake
I purchased the cupcake mold a long time ago when I got the idea for the party. This cupcake is the same size as a 13×9 sheet cake. It has sugar cookies on the outside and tie dye batter on the inside.

It was a party of it’s own.

4. The Goodie Bags
What happens when you have a party with enough sweets to feed the entire city? Leftovers. I provided little to go bags, and encouraged people to take goodies and a one year photo home with them.

5. The Memory Books
On the same table as the goodie bags were some pictures, photo albums, and SJ’s baby book for guests to thumb through that afternoon.

6. Valentines Stuff
The best part about an early March birthday party for a girl is all the pink stuff on CLEARANCE after valentine’s day. The cupcake tower, decorative, hearts, candy, and goodie bags were all at least 75% off.

7. Decorations
I started talking about this fun stuff from Party Express months ago.

8. The Gift Table
I decorated the gift table with a valentine clearance table cloth, the #1 photo prop that I used for her pictures, and our gift to her which was “If You Give A Cat A Cupcake”.

9. Wardrobe Changes
Yes this little diva had 3 wardrobe changes (although in all fairness we did this with our son too). The birthday dress that her photos were taken in.

Followed by the black and white over coat and cupcake bib for the eating portion of the party

Then this adorable ensemble with a customized cupcake onesie, tutu and big girlie bow made by my friend Crystal.

10. The People and Guest of Honor of Course
There were so many fun details that day I could literally do a scrapbook designated just to her birthday party, but take away all the sugar, pink, and helium and we would have still had one of the best days ever because of the people that were there and who it was all about.

This list is a part of Oh Amanda’s Top Ten Tuesday. Six more months before my little guys birthday. Yes I am already planning.

P-A-R-T-WHY? Because We Love To

I know when I get started on something my friends and readers never get to hear the end of it. I can’t help myself. Whether it’s the cereal party I had in high school or the “2nd wedding” I had for our 10th anniversary, I love event planning. Last year I wrote a post called the unparty where I explained that I will only throw big parties for my kids about every other year. I think the reason I set these limits for us is because I know I can’t hold myself back, I have to go all out. I love to party. Not Charlie Sheen party, but you know, sprinkles and balloons birthday kind of party.

SJ’s first birthday went above and beyond my expectations. It was incredible! I will post more details for top 10 Tuesday, but let me just say I personally was blown away. I was worried about her being overwhelmed and clingy, but she loved every minute of it and was the happiest I have ever seen her! Her brother Z did great too here he is helping blow out the candle.

She has never had cookies, chocolate, cake or anything like that so the cake eating was the highlight of the party as everyone anticipated how she would react to her first taste of sweets. She loved the chocolate. Would you expect anything else from my offspring!?

Contrary to what I expected she was very interested in her presents and was attentive the whole time.

I know a lot of people probably think it was stressful. It wasn’t at all and I know it looks like it cost a small fortune, but it didn’t. It was all done very economically and many people that love SJ very much pulled together to make it happen. I know she won’t remember this party, but I will. I will cherish it forever.

Diaper Savings (a cordial discussion)

Tomorrow is my baby’s first birthday and I am the one that got the big package in the mail. It’s 180 diapers, which for a cloth diapering mom should last a REALLY LONG TIME. This was the first time I have spent any money on diapers for her. I received about 7 packages of disposables when she was born. At first I only used about one or two disposable diapers a week, now that she is a more heavy wetter and eating solids we are at about a diaper a day (some days I use a few if we are out all day, other days I don’t use any). The best part is that I got this whole box of diapers for $9.00. I heard about a really great deal on amazon from passionate penny pincher and I used a $10.00 coupon along with swag bucks to make it a steal!
Now that I have done cartwheels about coupons and diapers allow me to vent for just a moment. I had a Facebook friend who is expecting for the first time and asked for tips from anyone who used cloth diapers. I shared my advice and I read this comment from one of her other friends

“I use Luvs disposable. By the time you spend time and $ on water and soap, I think the cost comes out about the same. I’d rather be spending all my moments I can with my children – not leaning over a toilet swishing poopies…”

Now, I would never suggest cloth diapers are for everyone and as you can see by the giant package of diapers in the photo above I am not anti disposables, but I found this comment to be a bit offensive. Not only is that not true that soap and water cost more than what you save, but is that really how cloth diaper users are perceived? That we spend all our time dumping poop and washing diapers? I have been using cloth diapers for over 3 years straight and if the messy mom can manage it then I can assure you that it is not overly time consuming. In no way do I feel like it is robbing me of moments with my children, certainly not anymore than FACEBOOK! Sometimes I even have my little ones helping me getting diapers from the washer to the dryer or running around outside while I hang them on the clothes line. If I find an amazing deal on disposables like I did this week then I can get it, if not no worries. I don’t have to budget diaper costs.
Thanks to this second round of cloth diapering I haven’t spent any cash on diapers for the first year of my baby girl’s life and that makes me happy. Now if you will excuse me I have to get back to “swishing poopies” down the toilet.

This post will be linked to other money saving ideas at LIFE AS MOM.

One Year Photos

This time last year I was blogging about one last date night at the end of my pregnancy.
Little did I know the arrival was 2 days away! Now here I am pulling together the final details of her first birthday party. I managed to get some one year photos on Sunday and SJ was all energy!

I’ve been planning this photo session for a while. I ordered the “big one” online months ago.

Then in January I found this dress at kid to kid and it even says birthday girl on it.

The only problem was that it was a size 18 months (which is a weird size for a birthday dress), but I had my mom alter it to 12 months and we were good to go.
So, without further ado I bring you one photo after the other from SJ’s one year shoot, because she was so cute I hard time narrowing it down.
Party Animal!!!
This is when she discovered that she could take out her bow. The top right is my favorite.
And out of over 100 shots we did manage to get one of her smiling AND looking at the camera. and this one that I am making wallets out of.

I think this little cupcake is ready to party and party we will, in just a couple more days!

I don’t want good kids

I finished up reading Grace Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel just in time to drop it off at the library on the due date. I learned a lot from this book as a parent and as a Christian. Grace based parenting is basically the opposite of fear based parenting. This could be operating out of fear for your children, or causing your children to react out of fear of you. This summary from page 213 really puts it all into perspective.

“Grace-based parenting is not a checklist for parenting; it’s a lifestyle. It’s a clear attempt to retrofit your minds to respond to your children in the same way God responds to you;. Being different, vulnerable, and candid isn’t something you do as a grace based family; it’s something you are. “

More than anything reading Grace Based parenting got my wheels turning even if it wasn’t principals straight out of the book. First of all the number one best thing I can do for my kids is be an example. I won’t be perfect and I will have to admit that and even ask forgiveness (which I have had plenty opportunities for already). But there is no way I can teach them and want them to succeed in a way that I am not holding true to in my own life.

Second my goal is not to raise good kids. My goal is to teach and equip my children for the real world as adults. I had a dog that I trained to do tricks, perform on command, and obey certain cues, but my children are not dogs. It’s tempting sometimes to want them to do what I say because they know better and to look like upstanding citizen out in public, but if it’s all just a bag of tricks then it amounts to nothing. Some people are completely against any kind of bribes, but lets face it there is usually a reward when it comes to performance. Some people are against warnings. My thoughts are that you can give too many warnings, but in reality if I was an adult that never got any warnings or second chances I would have failed at a lot of the things that I have been able to accomplish. With every discipline, praise, or instruction I am trying to lead with the big picture in mind.

I am a 3 year old when it comes to motherhood because that’s the age of my oldest son, and I am totally aware of that. I am sure I will look back and see how ignorant I was, but by the grace of God I can raise up children to love, serve, and live out the amazing plans that the Lord has for them.

Milestones

This week has been pretty eventful for my “babies” which are acting more like big kids everyday. SJ decided she is ready to start walking. She still crawls some, but she is more frequently walking from one activity to the next without any assistance. Here is a video I took at the beginning of the week.

Then yesterday Z had reached a new milestone of his own when he came into the room excited to show me the shirt and pants he had put on. I was blown away by this little achievement because he has never put on his own clothes. For nearly a year I had to pull his pants down and up for him every time he went to the bathroom. He has lots of talents, wardrobe however is not his strong suite. Naturally I photographed him in the hand selected, baby blue gap screen print t-shirt, with coordinating black denim, and black rim glasses.

He was so proud of himself and so was I. We even called his ever so fashionable father to share the news.
I guess I’ve got to get out the baby books for some updates. In Z’s case this will be one of the last ones. It’s bittersweet.
